Simon Shorvon

A Life in Retrospencil

2008

This portrait is of Simon Shorvon enclosed in the library of his mind. Frozen islands of memory inhabit the room: His family - Lynne his wife and Matthew his son aged nine years, three generations of Pissarro ghosts, his father’s grave (too high to dance upon); His leisure – the high Himalayas, his books, his art, his writing; His work – a Cambridge University window, Queen Square and the National Hospital for Neurology, valerian for epilepsy, his writings, his neurological hammer; his detestation behind the bars of her own malevolence. Historicity and nostalgia fused in a narrative dream; a static veil, a retrospective frozen in pencil.
